This is a summer series I’ve been brainstorming and dreaming up for years and I’m so excited to share it! This meaningful integration of creativity and wellness is at the heart of my therapeutic and artistic identities and I can’t wait to help your teens spark creativity through their own mindful practices.

If you’ve attended any of my lettering workshops before, then you’ve heard me talk on repeat about how lettering has been my creative outlet (and unknowingly my mindful practice) since I was a teen. For me, lettering has been such a personal and sincere way of releasing, processing, sharing and creating.

I’ve wanted to do teen lettering workshops for so long and many of you have asked for them! But I also wanted them to be more than just “how to do hand lettering” for this age group because at its core, creative outlets like lettering are such a grounding source of connection, identity, vision and voice.

If you have a teen in mind that could benefit from this series, I’d love for you to pass the info along! My inner child has been beaming with joy as I reconnect with so many of the practices that helped me articulate the “who am I” that I know can be so complex in teenage years.

I keep my little shop going because lettering continues to bring whimsy and joy into my life! Especially after a week in the counseling office, coming back to the craft table puts me at ease, helps me feel more grounded and reminds me how much I love expressing my creativity. Reflecting on these words from @pastoramybutler this Ash Wednesday (originally shared in 2020).

Setting a healthy boundary is NOT the same thing as hiding.

You’re not hiding or running away from something when you set a healthy boundary, but I hear a version of this misconception all the time in the therapy room.

Setting boundaries is the OPPOSITE of hiding because you are actually finding the courage to show up for yourself and acknowledge your needs.

Boundaries are so important! By setting your own boundaries, you’re telling others how you want and expect to be treated.

The bottom line: Saying yes to yourself is more important than maintaining a way of life that no longer works for you.

Holidays are especially hard for those grieving the loss of a loved one. The ways we handle them are as individual as we are, but that doesn’t mean that we have to grieve alone. It seems especially fitting that we notice our longing, our grief, our waiting, as we enter this longest night of 2024.

If you are grieving tonight, please know that you’re not alone. Maybe death or loss or terrible hurt has changed your experience of Christmas. Maybe you’ve lost a loved one, a job, a goal, a cause, a dream. If you are weary from the journey, I hope you know it’s okay to grieve. Let yourself grieve any form of loss you’ve experienced this year.

Please take a minute to ask yourself: What does grief look like for you right now? How can you honor what you need to grieve?

Maybe just taking a silent pause or lighting a candle tonight at home will be one way to honor your grief and the unique form it’s taking.

While everyone grieves in their own way, we all grieve where we love. This is a season of so much loss, I hope you know that you’re not alone in this. Peace be with you, my friend.

Uncle William brought all the holiday magic when he surprised the girls with tickets to watch him perform at Frozen in Concert with the Atlanta Symphony the other week! They especially loved pointing him out on stage and locating his picture on the wall of musicians!

I knew it was a memorable evening when Emory woke up the next morning saying “I saw Uncle William play the trumpet!”

I don’t have many words today, but I am reflecting on wise words from many who have come before us who have tirelessly fought for justice. I hope and pray for enduring change. The one step at a time is not so easy today.

I find myself especially holding my trans siblings in my heart. The rhetoric used in this campaign was so blatantly transphobic. You are loved. What happens to you matters to me. Your dignity is sacred. Your life matters.

As a therapist and minister, I hear so many unique stories and I know so many who are deeply grieving today.

May we remember that grief is not the same as anger. Grief is different than “I’m angry that he won.” Grief runs deeper, it’s more heavy, it acknowledges when a part of the human condition that is supposed to connect us has, in fact, harmed us.

I will always choose my neighbor in wholeness.

As a society we have to be able to acknowledge where “love your neighbor” sometimes doesn’t go very far when you support policies that actively work against your neighbor. As a parent, I’m finding this especially difficult to discuss. My 6 year old is paying attention, and she is confused and is asking a lot of questions that I don’t have good answers to.

I grieve with those who are grieving. I hold you in love and light today. Your stories are safe here. Here’s to figuring out the one step at a time together.

First grade! She was so excited and confident to enter familiar hallways. Riley loves her school community and her joy is infectious!

It’s the ordinary moments that make you the most extraordinary dad!

Slow mornings are the best. Spring has a way of becoming busier than expected, so I’m grateful for a day with no agenda with this sweet two year old (her birthday was last week)!

Years ago—at the start of the pandemic— I created these Mindful Coloring Sheets. Simple affirmations and doodles to help us find peace during an incredibly uncertain and stressful season of life. I forget that I created these daily as my own mindful practice in 2020 and now have over 30 of them as a downloadable coloring book in the shop!

I printed some out recently for the girls to be able to grab and color on demand. When Emory came to the table with crayons and said “Color, Mommy!” it was such a sweet reminder to pause and enjoy the simple moments. The best invitation!

May we all remember it’s okay to just be. May we grant ourselves the permission to let go of the “doing” and enjoy the simplicity of “being.”

What a year, friends. Lots of searching for answers and navigating a new diagnosis (TLDR: multiple sclerosis), AND a whole lot of simple living, restful days and family adventures along the way!

I’m so grateful for these memorable opportunities!

I’m learning more every day what it means to live freely, expansively and abundantly. There’s a part of me that’s often struggled with a fear of being misunderstood or seen as trying to “do it all” — when, at my core, I know I’m operating from a place of deep calling, intersectionality and freedom. I’m becoming more and more comfortable standing in this space. Regardless of how it may be perceived, I trust more and more that this is my deepest expression of love, connection and belonging to myself and to others.

Here’s to holding multiple parts of ourselves and allowing them to coexist with fluidity, grace and confidence. I’m not looking to edit myself or tackle new years “resolutions” for a new year. Instead, I want to say thank you to every unique part of myself that listened, advocated, nurtured, showed up and cared. This was a year when that level of advocacy really mattered and made a difference for my long term health!

I’m proud of who I am and who I’m becoming— and at the same time incredibly terrified of how it all may unfold. The balance of the fear and joy may just be the magic of it all. Hello, 2024!

I’ve been back in the therapy office this afternoon doing what I love after spending a Mommy and Me morning with the kindergartener who didn’t have school today. We brunched, we bought too much stuff at Target and had ice cream (because this weather can’t make up its mind and it was surprisingly warm today)!

There’s a lot of fun and meaningful things in the works—if this diagnosis has taught me anything, it’s taught me to remember we all have the capacity to live expansively and abundantly. I’ve been holding onto a Mary Poppins sized bag of ideas and intentions for quite some time, so if you see me putting out new things, projects, or other musings in the weeks and months to come, know that I’ve been feeling a nudge to just release it and put it out there because it’s time. ✨

I’m sitting at the infusion center at the neurologist office this morning getting my second infusion for my new health diagnosis: multiple sclerosis. I realized I haven’t shared this update with my IG community yet, and in the spirit of transparency, I want to take a second to share a bit of my journey. Before I share more, I want to be clear that I’m actually doing very well, symptoms are manageable and I’m receiving excellent treatment quickly! But I don’t want to hide this part of my story from social media because it’s my real life.

The backstory: In March, I ended up at the hospital by way of my optometrist discovering an afferent pupillary defect that merited an MRI stat (after a few *exhausting* months of various other appointments navigating nerve and hazy vision symptoms on my left side). I was finally discharged after 4 days of brain, cervical, thoracic and orbit MRI scans, a lumbar puncture, and steroid treatments, quickly given the MS diagnosis, referred to a neurologist and set up with my 2x/year infusions.

Mentally and emotionally, I’m in good spirits. While this has been a lot to take in, I have an audacious hope that with impactful and early treatment and care, I will learn what I need to cope and thrive. Six months into this diagnosis, this truly has been my experience! I feel grateful to have a flexible schedule that allows time for rest when I need it and to spend quality time with my family.

My biggest takeaway so far: WE HAVE TO BE OUR OWN SELF-ADVOCATES!!! An ophthalmologist told me “it was just dry eye” even AFTER I asked about MS (this diagnosis had been on my radar prior to receiving confirmation). I knew this was deeper than needing eye drops…🙄 Please trust your intuition when something feels off!

I’m thankful to have answers after the uncertainty, and I feel well cared for and able to live my life doing what I love with intention and joy. This is a part of my journey, but it is something I am LIVING with (not suffering from). This distinction has been important to me as I try to be mindfully aware of my response to this change. Thank you for journeying with me, I’m so grateful for you all!
